No, there was no problem on that date. There has never actually been a problem with MegaSearch.

MegaSearch indexes thousands of newsgroups, but not all of the 120,000+ newsgroups out there.
So it could be that the missing files come from a newsgroup that has not been indexed.
If you send me the name of the newsgroup and the filenames I will see what the reason is.

I've noticed that MegaSearch explicitly omits reporting of some file types, such as NFO which requires using the newsreader to see and download. This has been observed in at least the group "a.b.mac.osx.apps" which is indexed in both Easynews (my newsreader) and MegaSearch. Also, .zip files from the newsreader are sometimes missing from MegaSearch. Why is this?

ZIP files often contain files that contain viruses and are therefore deleted. NFO files are all indexed as far as I know.

Ah ha. NFO files seem to be typically posted as "filename.NFO.zip" so as a ".zip" file they have been excluded by MegaSearch and thus only appear using the newsreader. This has been frustrating since the files found through MegaSearch reference the availability of an NFO file. Thanks for the clarification.
