This morning Usenapp was wedged. That is, it was trying to download headers and this process stopped in the middle. The dock icon had a 3 in it which moved to 4 after a short while. I couldn't find a way to reset this so had to restart Usenapp and do the usual window shuffle.
Are your transfers and waits for responses protected by timeouts?
