I'm all for hiding Read posts in the main list of headers, but if I do so then Read posts are also hidden for the thread I'm reading. This makes it difficult to look back earlier in the thread to see the OP, get the context etc.
I'm sure I was able to see Read posts in this area in the last version. Is there a way of showing them without also showing them in the headers list that I have missed?
And if not, could it be made possible to control hide/show Read posts independently in the two areas?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but what I can do is make the read posts and threads hidden in the main view, but keep them listed in the bottom left view.

Does that solve the issue?

Yes, I believe that would solve the problem. I can't see why all the posts in a thread you are currently reading should not be visible; I frequently have to go back to a post I've read on a previous day to check a point.
Best would be to make hide/show read posts independently controllable in the main and the bottom left views.

Boffin I rarely want to see upthread. If I do, then I can set the thread unread and re-browse. For a long thread, having many read with a few new unread becomes a navigational pain very quick.

My suggestion to remove the read messages just from the upper view and leave them in the bottom left view is not an option after all.

A lot of features rely on the messages in the bottom left view, so both views need to be equal.

What about just removing completely read threads and don't touch read messages?
In that case the complete thread will be visible again as soon as a new single message arrives in that thread.
Is that an option?

Any prospect of a manual that would explain all these things - even if it was written by an experienced user delegated by yourself?

I think I understand what you mean. Why not try it in your next release - you can always reverse the change if you get lots of dissenters!

No, the "Hide read" functions does not delete anything. It just hide the read messages and threads.
If you turn the "Hide read" function off then these messages and threads are visible again.

The manual will be written when Usenapp goes out of alpha/beta.

I am still not sure what to do with the "Hide read" function.

When enabled both read articles and threads are hidden, but is that a good thing or do you guys prefer just to hide completely read threads and keep individual read articles visible?

Hiding read articles within an active thread confuses the thread tree.

I can totally see other people wanting to hide all read though. Perhaps a three way option selection?

In my opinion the first 3 options is how it currently is.

"Show all articles" = turn Hide Read off + Group Threads off
"Show threads with unread articles" = turn Hide Read on + Group Threads on
"Show only unread articles" = turn Hide Read on + Group Threads off

Aren't the last 3 options except the middle one not the same as above?

"Show all articles" = same as the first option above?
"Hide read threads" = you mean "show thread including all articles read/unread" and "hide thread if all articles are read"?
"Hide all read articles" = same as the last option above?

The first set of 3 looks similar to Thunderbird (I don’t use it any more so can’t be sure) but would be my preferred choice.

I would prefer to have independent control over hide/show read articles (1) the list of downloaded headers and (2) the thread I am currently reading.
Hopefully the attached screenshot will illustrate what I mean.

Unfortunately that is no longer possible with both the articles in view #1 and view #2.

Previously with just the threads in view #1 and the articles in view #2 that was possible, but now the articles are in both views it isn't.

Ah, well. If it had been my option, I would have not had the articles in view in (1) and gone for independent control of (1) and (2). But the decision has been taken, and I will just have to thole it.

I imagine that there was some sort of majority preference for the current arrangement.
