Yes, the second group of three is the same programmatically, but just phrased differently for humans.
Starting v0.70, this feature only hides read threads. Read message are no longer hidden.

Starting v0.71 you have the choice to: "Hide threads only" or "Hide threads and messages"

Boffin I rarely want to see upthread. If I do, then I can set the thread unread and re-browse. For a long thread, having many read with a few new unread becomes a navigational pain very quick.
